GAViM: Visibility & Fine Particulate Monitoring Locations

Centre for Atmospheric Research Experiments, Egbert, Ontario (until September 1999)

Latitude, longitude, altitude: 44.2 degres North, 79.8 degrees West, 251 m

Sampler Type: Compatible with the Module A (PM2.5 at 22.9 L/min) of the IMPROVE sampler

Sampling Period: Since November 1994;

Sampling schedule: till June 1998: 24-hour samples taken on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 0:01 to 23:59, since June 22, 1998: one-in-six-days from 10:00 Local Standard Time to 10:00 following day.

Measured species: Concentrations of elements with atomic number from 11 to 82 (sodium to lead) by PIXE, hydrogen by PESA, atmospheric light absorption coefficient by particles / light absorbing carbon by LIPM, PM2.5 by gravimetric analysis.

Site Overview: The sampler has been installed in the Centre for Atmospheric Research Experiments - a rural laboratory located in Southern Ontario. Both the filter module and the pump house are sited on a small building.

CAPMoN site at Esther, Alberta (until Dec 2000)

Latitude, longitude, altitude: 51 degrees 40' North, 110 degrees 12' West, 616 m

Sampler Type: Compatible with the Module A (PM2.5 at 22.9 L/min) of the IMPROVE sampler

Sampling Period: Since July 1995

Sampling schedule: till June 1998: 24-hour samples taken on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 0:01 to 23:59, since June 22, 1998: one-in-six-days from 10:00 Local Standard Time to 10:00 following day.

Measured species: Concentrations of elements with atomic number from 11 to 82 (sodium to lead) by PIXE, hydrogen by PESA, atmospheric light absorption coefficient by particles / light absorbing carbon by LIPM, PM2.5 by gravimetric analysis.

Site Overview: The sampler has been installed on an existing CAPMoN (Canadian Air and Precipitation Monitoring Network) site in the SE part of Alberta 13.7 km West of the Saskatchewan border. Both the filter module and the pump house are on a roof of a 7x3x3 m trailer. Module inlet stack is about 5.5 m above ground.

Toronto (Ontario) site at Evans Ave (until May 1999)

Huntsman Marine Science Centre, St. Andrews, New Brunswick (until July 1997)

Latitude, longitude, altitude: 45 degrees 5.2' North, 67 degrees 4.5' West, 53 m

Sampler Type: Compatible with the Module A (PM2.5 at 22.9 L/min) of the IMPROVE sampler

Sampling Period: December 1994 to July 1997

Sampling schedule: 24-hour samples taken on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 0:01 to 23:59

Measured species: Concentrations of elements with atomic number from 11 to 82 (sodium to lead) by PIXE, hydrogen by PESA, atmospheric light absorption coefficient by particles / light absorbing carbon by LIPM, PM2.5 by gravimetric analysis.

Site Overview: The sampler was installed in the Huntsman Marine Science Centre in SW part of New Brunswick. Both the filter module and the pump house were on a ply wood platform; the pump house exhaust was about 3.5 m down wind from the filter module. The inlet stack was approximately 3.5 m above the ground.
